Eye of the Tiger

Say what you want about Tiger Woods, there are very few athletes that will ever be worthy of sitting at the same lunch table with the man.  With a net worth of $500 million dollars, 14 major championship wins, 72 PGA Tour wins, and arguably the greatest golfer of all time, there's no denying his ability on the golf course.  Away from the golf course however, it would be foolish to think that his life is as easy as he makes a putt look on the 18th green.

Woods' highly publicized divorce, clearly a result of numerous sexual affairs shattered his marriage, reputation, golf game, and psyche.  So much so, Woods took a leave of absence from playing competitive golf for about five months.  Returning in April 2010, Woods' game struggled severely.  In that same year, he lost his No. 1 ranking and didn't win a tournament for 107 weeks until he finally won the Chevron World Challenge in Decemeber 2011.  It wasn't until this past Sunday that Woods had followed up with another win, making it about four months.

So, here's a guy, arguably the greatest golfer and athlete the world has ever seen, and he's won two mediocre tournaments in what seems like an eternity.  Despite all of that, he is still considered one of the favorites to win the upcoming Masters Tournament, a tournament Woods has won four times before.  You have to be pretty darn talented to win two tournaments in about two years and be one of the favorites to win the most prestigious golf tournament on the PGA Tour do you not?  I mean sure, the man made some pretty serious mistakes in his life, but I'm one that respects not what he's done, but rather where's he come.

Look, imagine yourself with millions of dollars, the best golfer in the world, the face of Nike, and young.  Well, it's hard to imagine isn't it?  That's because it's not realistic, unless you're Tiger Woods. I'm not condoning what he did, I'm just not surprised or judging him because of it.  I don't know Tiger Woods.  I, like you and him, are merely people.  There are certain things that people do that garner respect and praise.  Tiger Woods' golf game is one of those things.  His actions away from the golf course are maybe not one of those things, but like I touched upon earlier, it's hard to make judgments on people when you don't walk in their shoes.

I was never really an avid fan of golf or Tiger Woods for that matter, but now I will at least watch.  I might even cheer.  I think Tiger Woods has come a long way and it would be fun to see the best golfer in the world playing like it again.  I know Tiger will continue to compete, and for that, I commend him.  I'll be tuning in to this year's Masters and won't be surprised if Tiger is leaving Augusta with a red polo, and a green jacket, of course.

Gotta compete.
